Rebuilding the Walls
Week 2 Ask for What You Want
And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us. — 1 John 5:14
King Artaxerxes took noticed in his presence the countenance of Nehemiah the cupbearer. The king inquired, “Why the long face? You’re not sick, are you? Or are you depressed?” Nehemiah became more agitated because of the reality of his depression, and fear was on display. The king began to dig deeper into his situation and asked, “So what do you want?” After much prayer, Nehemiah responded to the king his desire to rebuild the ruined, broken walls. Nehemiah found favor with the king. The generous hand of God was with Nehemiah and the support of his leaders as he sought out to rebuild the walls.
The broken and wasted places in your life never go unnoticed by God. He sees you and cares for you! You already have God’s attention that is why He sent Jesus to save you, show you the way, and support you as you proceed with Him.
Lord, how wonderfully you bless the righteous. Your favor wraps around each one and covers them under your canopy of kindness and joy. —Psalm 5:12
I cry out loudly to God, loudly, I plead with God for mercy. I spill out all my complaints before him and spell out my troubles in detail. —Psalm 142:1-2
All this is proceeding along lines planned all along by God and then executed in Christ Jesus. When we trust in him, we’re free to say whatever needs to be said, bold to go wherever we need to go. So don’t let my present trouble on your behalf get you down. Be proud! —Ephesians 3:11-13
God said, “I’ve taken a good, long look at the affliction of my people in Egypt. I’ve heard their cries for deliverance from their slave masters; I know all about their pain. And now I have come down to help them, pry them loose from the grip of Egypt, get them out of that country and bring them to a good land with wide-open spaces, a land lush with milk and honey, the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. —Exodus 3:7-8
God has heard and seen your afflictions and pain. Physical, emotional, relational, and social pain. As you are deciding and or continuing to rebuild your “inner” walls start with fasting and prayer for unbelief, doubt, and lies. Ask God for what you want. Pour out your request in details to Jesus—the King, He is the only one who can pull you through your situation. You have the support of His leadership to back you up.
Let this simple prayer of Nehemiah be yours as you start your day, “So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, that you send me to rebuild the walls.”—Nehemiah 2:4-5
What, then, shall you say in response to these things? If God is for me, who can be against me?
Next Step: Continue to fast one meal this week and pray. Ask in details what you want from the King. You already have His favor.
