The book of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus Christ is still our High Priest. His role as High Priest surpassed the roles of the "Old" Covenant high priests, as He was working according to a far better plan. One of the first high priests was traced back to Aaron, the brother of Moses, who was of the Levi tribe and upheld the Levitical laws. In addition, the high priests were noted for their conduct and had to be physically whole without any defects. They also wore the Urim and the Thummin over their hearts in their breast pieces as they inquired of the Lord for answers in daily situations that they faced.
Some of the other priestly responsibilities were: overseeing junior priests, sharing the will of God with the people, offering sin offerings for the people and himself, and conducting the annual Day of Atonement service. This service was the most important of his functions because he was the only one who was allowed to enter into the Most Holy Place behind the veil. The high priest would stand before God with the blood sacrifices for the sins committed that year. He had to sprinkle the blood on God's throne known as the "mercy seat."
God had a better plan. The Levitical laws given by Moses were much too strenuous and grievous for a weakling people. The Law had no pity, it was inflexible... tablets of stone, gave no aid, only rules of do's and dont's, thou shall and shall nots. I mean who could breathe and live under that kind of pressure to please God. The Law also showed no gentleness, tenderness or compassion.
Living under the Law constantly seared the conscience of the people that led to cycles and cycles of condemnation and failure. The Law has always been set against grace and truth. Praise God for grace and truth! John 1:17 shares with us that, " For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
In order for us to live whole and well we must constantly renew our minds and lean them towards grace and truth. Here is where Christ fulfilled the Law. The Spirit gives life and the letter of the law would kill even our best intentions if we still continued to live under the do it yourself system. Jesus surpasses the Law that demands and offers no support to any of us.
Only God can rewrite such a letter. His new letter authorizes us to help carry out this new plan of action. This new plan that Jesus worked from wasn’t written out with ink on paper, with pages and pages of legal footnotes, killing your spirit. It’s written with Spirit on spirit, His life on our lives!
This is such good news for you today that brings such hope, comfort, compassion, love, and kindness from our generous God who freely gives you His help. Isn't that refreshing news today? Knowing that the Law was given, but grace and truth came through Jesus. Now can you see why you and I can come through anything when we come to Jesus? His burdens are easy and His promises aren't burdensome and His yokes are light. Make up your mind today to accept God's new plan, you will be better off in the long run.
Decree It: I am freely justified by the grace of Jesus through the redemption that I have in Him. I have decided to live by God's new plan for my life. I take courage and comfort knowing that this new plan is better for every area of my life. I refuse to live in bondage again to the law that is burdensome. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. I am free and enjoy my freedom in Christ Jesus!
